India continues to impose steep tariffs and a range of regulatory barriers on imports from the United States, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and digital services, according to the latest assessment by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).
India’s tariff policy aims to regulate trade, protect local industries, and generate revenue via taxes on imported and exported goods, Union minister Jitin Prasada told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. His reply comes a day before US President Donald Trump’s proposed reciprocal tariffs come into effect.
The government’s decision to convert Rs 36,950 crore dues of Vodafone Idea (VIL) into equity is a “major” and “timely” display of support that will offer significant cash flow relief to the telco in the next three years and help it complete long-delayed bank debt raise, Citi said on Monday.
